The Hawaii State Legislature passed two nasty internet taxation bills this session. Both are up for a decision by the Governor. I urge a veto on both HB 1405 and SB 1678. Most of the ruling Democrats in both sides of the legislature would like to have more taxes sucked out of our wallets. They already have increased the taxes on hotels, gasoline and income this year. Don't let them tax our internet transactions.
This is what you can do. Write, fax, email or call the Governor's office and urge her to veto both HB 1405 and SB 1678. Here is a link to her contact information: Governor's Office Contact Page.
It is rather odd that the tech sector in this community are up in arms mostly against HB 1405 but not against SB 1678. All new taxes are bad and an additional strain on our dwindling finances.
Short Bill Summary
- HB 1405 will tax affiliate programs... re: Google ad and other display ad income on your website.
- HB 1678 is the notorious "Streamline Tax" bill pact. Will apply Hawaii taxes to out of state transactions. Requires enabling legislation from the Federal Government before the law can be implemented. Supported by more than 20 states.
